The Resort

Palmaïa: a Sacred, Energetic Place nestled in Nature

Nestled between the edge of the ocean and a tropical jungle, Palmaïa sits on mythic ground. This is a land where remnants of Mayan sacred sites still exist, outside of public view. A land which has been left largely undisturbed. A land that instantly soothes and calms. There’s an energy here that’s undeniable, and palpable. You feel it the minute you enter the portal that transports you from the outside world into the safety and solitude of the jungle that is home to Palmaïa.

We operate from the perspective that we need to do everything we can to respect the specialness of this place. After all, nature is everywhere, and we firmly believe that our spirit heals with the joy of nature. So we choose to live in harmony with the constant expansion of the jungle, clipping here, trimming there, always mindful of our place so we disrupt as little as possible to allow nature to follow its path. That’s why we made a conscious decision to build our resort up and not out—to preserve as much of the revered land and natural landscape as possible.

Walking up from the beach, the jungle acts as protector from wind, rain and the outside world. Just inside the jungle’s front lines lie seven buildings that stand like sentries to protect the diverse ecosystem on the other side. Passing between these buildings leads you into a cooler, sheltered world that implores your curious side to seek out and discover. Wandering pathways undulate between trees and plants and rocks and lead to quiet yoga decks, tranquil cenotes, and peaceful spa treatment temples. A meandering woven wooden tunnel is a passageway from your room to the beach, and elevated walkways wind through foliage that forms a protective canopy overhead as you make your way to a restaurant, an art class, or healing session.

Our jungle and the ocean just beyond hide many secrets and serve as a home and safe haven for all types of plants and animals. A variety of Palms, Giant Taro and Agaves dot the landscape, anchored by the dense jungle that feels wild, yet tame at the same time. Animals on the ground are present everywhere. From Sereques, the lovable rodents who aren’t shy, and Coati with their ring-like tails, to Spider Monkeys, Igauanas and Armadillos—this is a place to sit back and enjoy the show. Flocks and colonies of birds such as Frigates, Great Blue Herons, and even Parrots, Cuckoos, and Toucans share the waters, jungle foliage and air with butterflies, dragonflies and fireflies. And close to shore, Sea Turtles and Crabs live at the edge of the beach while Grouper, Marlin, Sail Fish and Parrot Fish are some of the species that call the deeper ocean home.

The energy here at Palmaïa will instantly calm you, shut down the outside world, and take you to a place where all that matters is the experience that unfolds in front of you. It’s tough to put a finger on why you feel the way you feel when you’re here. Centered. At peace. Happy. Maybe it’s because like nature itself, so many things about Palmaïa feel natural, unplanned, and just sort of flow, as it if the resort was always calling, and you were always meant to be here.

Cenote Las Casas

The term ‘Cenote’ originates from the Mayan word ‘dzonot,’ translating to abyss. Beyond being vital sources of life, cenotes are hubs that provide water and biodiversity, holding cultural significance as entrances to the ‘other world’ or’underworld’ for ancestors. They serve as focal points forcommunion and the worship of deities.

Location

Palmaïa is located on the most southern point of Playa del Carmen surrounded by 400 hectares of virgin jungle. Close enough to be an easy 45min drive to Cancun airport, yet far enough to feel private and secluded. There are no roads or streets to Palmaïa, therefore the only way of accessing is through another neighbouring resort. This system allows a double layer of security as you have to enter a private residential development and then cross a resort by golf cart to enter Palmaïa.
